Yam Piece Community Centre and Nursery School

Yam Piece is a low income and densely populated area on the outskirts of the capital Roseau, in Dominica.  The area suffers from many social problems such as;violence, unemployment, youth disenfranchisement, young single mothers and poor quality housing.  Though there is a tight sense of community amongst the residents.  The area received extensive damage in Hurricane Maria in 2017.  The Community Centre and Nursery School is in the Centre of the housing area and was badly damaged by the storm.  The building requires extensive repairs to restore it to a facility that is fit for purpose.

Project Summary

It was decided that a new building would be the best option for the people and children of the Yam Piece Community and therefore a small multipurpose Centre was constructed on the existing site.  The Centre will house the Nursery School, with the capacity for up to 20 children, while also serving as a Community Centre, Hurricane Shelter and venue for events.  It is expected that the Centre will revitalize the area and provide a focal point for the people of the area.
